About Metroid amiibo
Metroids are the floating jellyfish-like alien creatures that the entire Metroid franchise is named after. Samus Aran's job is to hunt and exterminate them. The original 1986 Metroid established the core game-loop: Samus enters an alien planet, finds power-ups, eventually fights the larval Metroid, the giant Mother Brain, and the Metroid Queen at the end.
The franchise has been extending that loop for nearly forty years. The amiibo released September 15, 2017 alongside Metroid: Samus Returns and depicts a single Metroid creature in its larval-floating configuration.
Tap it on Samus Returns to unlock the Metroid Marker, a map mechanic that helps the player find Metroids on the planet's surface. The amiibo function is essentially 'use the Metroid figure to help find Metroids,' which is the kind of recursive joke I respect.
It pairs with Samus Aran, Smash Samus, Dark Samus, and the broader Metroid cluster. Get it now so that you can finally capture the last metroid and put the universe at peace. Until Nintendo makes another game that is.
