About Waluigi amiibo
Waluigi was created as Wario's tall purple counterpart for Mario Tennis (2000 N64) because the developers needed a doubles partner for Wario and ran out of existing characters to use. He has no franchise of his own. He's appeared exclusively in Mario spinoffs (Mario Tennis, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Strikers) and has zero mainline-Mario presence, which means his entire two-decade career consists of showing up to Mario sports games to lose at sports. The amiibo released April 16, 2017.
The joke that has dogged Waluigi since 2008 is that Sakurai has repeatedly declined to put him in Smash. Brawl: not playable, only an Assist Trophy. Smash 4: not playable, only an Assist Trophy. Smash Ultimate: not playable, only an Assist Trophy. The Smash community has mounted Waluigi-for-Smash campaigns for every roster reveal cycle since 2014, and Sakurai politely refuses each time. Waluigi has more amiibo merchandise than fighter slots, which is the kind of running joke that becomes a community in-joke because the in-joke is real.
He pairs with Wario, the Mario sports-spinoff subcluster, and a permanent slot on the Smash speculation bracket. Maybe Smash 6 will let him in. It will not.
