Cloud Strife debuted in Final Fantasy VII (1997 PS1) as the spiky-haired ex-SOLDIER protagonist who carries the Buster Sword and has memory issues he sorts out across forty hours of gameplay. His Smash 4 DLC inclusion (December 2015) was Square Enix's first major Smash licensing deal and the moment Smash 4 became a cross-platform-IP fighting game in earnest.

He fights with the Buster Sword and a Limit Break meter. The meter fills with damage dealt and damage taken; when full, his next special move triggers a buffed Limit Break version. Cross Slash, Climhazzard, Blade Beam, and Finishing Touch all have base and Limit-Break variants.
